Duration of the programme

The programme lasts for 4 years (8 semesters including one devoted to seagoing service). The whole programme is delivered in Polish language.

Graduate profile

Graduates of this programme are awarded the degree of inżynier (corresponding to Bachelor of Engineering). They are prepared to work as deck officers on sea and inland water vessels, in enterprises involved in international shipping. They may be employed by highly specialised services and merchant fleet, fishing fleet, passenger ships, offshore vessels securing oil fields, oil drilling and production platforms, modern specialised, hydrographic and research vessels. They may also join on-shore operation and technical services, maritime administration, classification institutions and SAR services.

Maritime studies

Maritime studies are an attractive option for anyone interested in seas and oceans. Especially taking into account fact that work in this area is well paid and new people are still needed also according to some data, 90% of world trade takes place by ship. But before going to sea or finding employment in one of the companies located on land the candidate will have to learn hard and pass many exams. Marine studies in Maritime University of Szczecin will allow you to participate in many interesting scientific activities and will give you the opportunity to make new friends and follow your passions.


Duration of the programme and number of hours

The programme lasts for 3.5 years (7 semesters). The total number of course hours is 2605 per person, including:

  • 1125 hours of lectures for all students in the same year
  • 450 hours of general classes (for groups of 32)
  • 775 hours of laboratories (for groups of 16)
  • 225 hours of design classes (for groups of 16)

Additionally, students have a two-week practical training after each year of study. There are also obligatory placements in companies or state institutions involved in geodesy and cartography, geoinformatics, or hydrography.


The curriculum was structured so as to allow you to become familiar with a large scope of knowledge related to geodesic measurements, as well as the development of all kinds of maps and geospatial analyses. During your studies, you will learn how to set out a building, measure a plot of land and develop a numeric model and a Digital Elevation Model with the use of a drone. You will find out what an orthoimage is and how to make it, and you will get to know the ins and outs of laser scanning and 3D studies. You will find out what GIS (Geographic Information System) is and how to use the power of geospatial data to obtain a great deal of practical information while conducting computer-based analyses. From the third year of study you will have the opportunity to extend your knowledge in geoinformatics – through creating databases of spatial data and through designing geoinformatic or hydrographic systems – performing field measurements with the use of our equipment and a professional boat, Hydrograf XXI. The programme on Geodesy and Cartography at Maritime University of Szczecin is unique. We will teach you how to conduct measurements from the air with the use of drones, on the ground with the use of specialized geodesic measuring equipment, and under water, where the landscape is “depicted by sound”.

Graduate profile

The most important assets of geodesy and cartography graduates:

  • Knowledge within the scope of geodesic measurements.
  • Practical skills in developing maps and geospatial analyses.
  • Practical skills of obtaining and compiling measurement data collected with the use of drones, laser scanning, hydrographic underwater measurements and modern geodetic measuring equipment.
  • Skill in conducting geodetic measurements with use of satellite navigation such as, among others GPS, GLONASS.
  • Knowledge of the most state-of-the-art computer systems for designing, processing and managing spatial data (among others, GIS and CAD).
  • Knowledge and skills within the scope of land registry and real estate management.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Use of a foreign language inclusive of its professional aspects and the problematics of geodesy and cartography.
Apart from the knowledge obtained, partaking in our programme offers an interesting experience and is a great adventure. You can also develop your passions within a number of scientific student clubs, where many interesting and experimental measurements are conducted. This will allow you to find work both in Poland and abroad, in geodetic, hydrographic and geoinformatic companies, as well as with various authorities, design offices and research and development institutes.

Important! 30% of the best graduates in the geodesy and cartography programme will have access to paid placements. The placement grant is gross PLN 2,200 per month plus the possibility of being refunded with accommodation and travelling costs.

Prospects for the programme

Who these days does not need information regarding spatial positioning? Whether it involves maps contained in databases, geodetic measurements on a construction site, 3D/4D studies and analyses, or geovisualisations, they are all connected with space - we will teach you to measure and create it. The prospects for this programme are very good - we are part of the Polish National Smart Specialization: Smart geoinformatic networks and technologies. The dynamically developing IT and geoinformatics sector makes us part of the upcoming services identified as part of the regional specialization for West Pomeranian Province. We measure space, and create its digital image, we visualize and analyze space in time. We measure form the air, land and under water. We are the geodesy of the future!


The studies last 3.5 years (7 semesters). A graduate of this field of study is awarded the degree of inżynier (corresponding to Bachelor of Engineering). One specialisation is available beginning from the 5th semester: Marine Computer Science. Graduates of this field of study are among the most demanded specialists on the labour market. They may find employment in broadly understood IT sector including design, development and operation of IT systems, management of IT projects, creation and maintenance of websites, data base and network administration, IT services for enterprises, particularly for ones from the maritime industry. Remuneration in IT business is significantly higher than average salaries in Poland.

  • Marine Electrical Automation,
  • Mechatronics of Power Systems.
A graduate of this field of study is awarded the degree of inżynier (corresponding to Bachelor of Engineering). Having completed the Marine Electrical Automation specialisation, he/she may find employment among crew members of sailing vessels as a ship electrical automation officer, in technical supervision services of ship operators, in classification association services, in production and repair shipyards, in shipbuilding industry enterprises as well as others involved in manufacturing and operation of machinery and mechatronic systems.
Graduates of the Mechatronics of Power Systems (shore-based specialisation)  are prepared to take positions in production and repair shipyards, repair services of production enterprises, technical supervision services of enterprises, classification associations, design, construction and technological institutions connected with shipbuilding industry.


The studies last 3.5 years (7 semesters). As a part of this field of study, the following specialisations are available beginning from the 5th semester:

  • Production and Service Quality Management,
  • Innovation Management in Production and Services,
  • Security Systems in Production and Services,
  • Computer Systems for Production Management,
  • Management of Industrial Power Systems.
A graduate of this field of study is awarded the degree of inżynier (corresponding to Bachelor of Engineering). The person is prepared to perform managerial and executive functions in production and service enterprises in the TFL (transport, freight, logistics) sector, with particular emphasis on maritime economy enterprises. The graduate is also prepared to manage logistics processes in the European transport system and manage integrated transport.

Absolwenci tego kierunku posiadają tytuł zawodowy inżyniera. Są przygotowani do pracy w charakterze oficerów pokładowych na statkach morskich i śródlądowych, w przedsiębiorstwach związanych z żeglugą międzynarodową. Mogą znaleźć zatrudnienie w służbach i flocie handlowej o wysokim stopniu specjalizacji, flocie połowowej, statkach pasażerskich, statkach offshore zabezpieczających pola naftowe, na wieżach wiertniczych i produkcyjnych, na nowoczesnych statkach specjalistycznych, hydrograficznych i badawczych. Mogą także zasilać lądowe służby eksploatacyjne, techniczne, administrację morską, instytucje klasyfikacyjne i służbę SAR.
